JOHN 6:52-65 (New International Version)
[/size]52Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?"
53Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. 55For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. 57Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your forefathers ate manna and died, but he who feeds on this bread will live forever." 59He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum. Many Disciples Desert Jesus 60On hearing it, many of his disciples said, "This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?"
61Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, "Does this offend you? 62What if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before! 63The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit[e] and they are life. 64Yet there are some of you who do not believe." For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. 65He went on to say, "This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled him."

John 6:52-65
verse 52 - Flesh can't make a difference between fleshly eating, which is done by the help of the teeth & spiritual eating, which consists in faith and it condemns that which it does not understand so the truth must be preached and taught.
verse 53 -Eating his flesh is only expression for believing.
verse 56 - As our food becomes incorporated with ourselves, so Christ and those who eat His flesh and drink His blood become spiritually one life though personally distinct.
verse 65 - Given to those only who will receive it on God's own terms

nice insight Ems! it's funny how Jesus' desciples thought he was going to offer his actual flesh! i guess, if i was there hearing Jesus speak i would have thought the same! hahaa.. so is the verse trying to say something to you or asking you to do or change anything?

Minsan nahihirapan talaga ako ispellingin si Jesus, masyado matalinhaga, tapos nung kapanahunan niya feeling ko 'pag nagtanong ka eh isasagot din sa iyo mas malalim pa kaya baka minsan nag-aalangan mga apostles niya to ask for the meaning of the things He just said. hehehe
Thank you sis ems for the brief explanation, but I have to be honest, why does Jesus really need to make example of eating His flesh and drinking His blood, what does it really symbolize? Flesh symbolizes solid food to nourish, meaning it would be His word that would feed our soul. I don't get the blood part, it's liquid, what does it mean?

Very interesting discussion. I'm no Bible scholar and it's an effort to take apart the verse word for word to understand it exactly. I hope I can attend the Bible study this Saturday to join the discussion.

Key verses in the chapter: by Pastor Joey Reyes
John 6:25-71. context is people were running after Jesus, BECAUSE THEY WANTED FREE MEALS. sinita sila ni Lord (v.26). Jesus then redirects their attention to the importance of spiritual nourishment/life instead of physical needs.[/b]

JONH 6:52-56 KEY VERSES IN THE CHAPTER
John 6:25-71. context is people were running after Jesus, BECAUSE THEY WANTED FREE MEALS. sinita sila ni Lord (v.26).
Jesus then redirects their attention to the importance of spiritual nourishment/life instead of physical needs.
Jesus offers a contrast: MANNA FROM HEAVEN during moses' time, satisfied the people's physical hunger (and yet they died anyway), while Jesus, THE HEAVENLY BREAD, offers eternal life to those who partake (receive him/believe him/put their faith in him) v.35.
Eating his flesh', is yes, another way of saying that only through believing in him will a person live forever. Malalim na paliwanagan ito, sayang, sana dito kayo para pag-usapan. just concentrate on the idea of the chapter - don't isolate the words. take the whole idea. (from Pastographer Joey Reyes)

"John 6:25-71. context is people were running after Jesus, BECAUSE THEY WANTED FREE MEALS. sinita sila ni Lord (v.26). "
this explains a lot! haahha
good job Emz! this one really draws the line and shows where Jesus' statements came from. turns out that he was not out there to freak people out but to give them a timely analogy that's inline with their actual purpose for comming. free meals.
in comparison though, that is what they got. a free meal to everlasting life!
nice discussion we're having here guys! keep them comming!
hope Mark, Jeff and the others get to post here too!

Nicely done, FaithRiders.
MANNA from heaven nourishes our bodies.
Jesus Christ's flesh and blood nourishes our spirit.
Amen.
But let me share to you what's on my mind. Supposed you lived in those times. That particular time and John chapter 6 was happening right before your eyes. Jesus was saying "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty" (v.35). I honestly will say too that "this is hard teaching, who can accept it?" (v.60). Here is a man, how can I eat this man's flesh and drink his blood. Will you make me a murderer and make God's wrath befall on me? By this time, I think Jesus has not made known to his disciples what was his mission on earth. To be given to men and crucified. In fact the Jews wanted to make Jesus king by force (v.15). I would say the Jews and even the disciples did not give Jesus their 100% trust before Jesus Christ's ressurection and if I were in their place I would not have given Jesus my 100% trust too. Jesus even predicted Peter's Denial (John 13:38). Then after Jesus was arrested, all the disciples deserted him and fled (Matthew 26:56).
Understanding Jesus Christ's death and ressurection will give a very clear picture about Jesus Christ's flesh and blood being offered to us to eat. Sadly on that particular moment, it was indeed very unclear even to the disciples. But Jesus understood the situation. Jesus gave them a question "Does this teaching offend you? What if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before?" (v.61-62).
FaithRiders, we now know that Jesus indeed ascended to where he was before. Accepting Jesus's flesh and blood is accepting what he did on calvary and this accepting this teaching is what nourishes our spirit.
Anyone of us who is not 100% sure of going to heaven must first "witness" Christ's death and ressurection and ascension. Please read these verses found in Luke 24:36-53. At this time only did Jesus opened their minds to understand the scriptures (v.45).
No, I did not actually saw Jesus's death, ressurection, and ascension. But I feel more blessed because after being told of this story many years ago, I believed and accepted this bread, this flesh and blood. and have faith that it will make me live forever.

Ooooooooops! antagal na pala nito, ngayon ko lang nakita. great discussion. "hard teaching" nga ito... but what i like best sa passage na ito was left out by the given text. Why papa jon? he he pansinin nyo naman kung gaano kaganda! John 6:66-69 66 From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. 67 "You do not want to leave too, do you?" Jesus asked the Twelve. 68 Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God."
